Fungal Nails & Athlete’s Foot

Fungal nail infections and Athlete’s foot are common, especially in warm and moist environments. These conditions can cause discolouration, thickening, and crumbling of the nails or itchy, flaky skin between the toes.

Fungal infections are contagious and be caught from contaminated public areas such as pools & gym changing rooms.Fungal spores love moist dark areas and if left untreated they can cause more serious infections such as cellulitis.

A long term neglected fungal skin infection can these cause fungal nail infection which can be harder to treat. Fungi maybe present in footwear such as sweaty trainers or football boots. They can also be present in old worn shoes.

They are not only found in people who go to the gym, but also those that have conditions such as diabetes or autoimmune disease are more prone to fungal infections.

Treatments involve over the counter anti-fungal agents. Wearing well fitted shoes, changing socks daily and alternating shoes (not wearing the same pair two days running). Maintain good foot hygiene & wearing flip flops in communal showers.

Helpful advice
  • Wear thick cushioned socks
  • Wear wide comfortable shoes with a low heel and soft sole that don’t rub
  • Use soft insoles or heel pads in your shoes
  • Soak corns and calluses in warm water to soften them
  • Regularly use a pumice stone or foot file to remove hard skin
  • Moisturise to help keep skin soft
